Ingredients

Base
  • 40 Saltine crackers about 1 sleeve
  • 1 cup Unsalted butter
  • 1 cup Light brown sugar packed
  • 2 cups Semi-sweet chocolate chips
Optional Toppings
  • 0.5 cup Chopped pecans or walnuts optional
  • 0.25 cup Crushed candy canes optional
  • 0.5 tsp Flaky sea salt optional
  • Holiday sprinkles or toffee bits for garnish

Equipment

  • 10x15-inch rimmed baking sheet
  • Medium saucepan
  • Spatula
  • Parchment paper or aluminum foil

Method

  1. Heat oven to 400°F. Line 10x15-inch baking sheet with parchment or foil with overhang. Arrange saltines in single layer, breaking pieces to fill gaps.
  2. Melt butter in saucepan over medium heat. Stir in brown sugar. Bring to rolling boil and cook exactly 3 minutes, stirring constantly.
  3. Pour hot toffee over crackers immediately and spread evenly. Bake 5 minutes until bubbling. Remove and sprinkle chocolate chips on top.
  4. Wait 2-3 minutes, then spread melted chocolate smooth. Add toppings while soft. Refrigerate 2 hours until firm. Break into pieces and serve.

Notes

Use real butter for best results. Stir constantly during boiling. Chill completely before breaking. Store in airtight container up to 1 week.
