Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 1 pound ground beef 80/20 for optimal flavor
  • 3 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 teaspoon fresh ginger grated or minced
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce or tamari for gluten-free
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 2 green onions chopped, plus extra for garnish
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 cups cooked rice jasmine, basmati, or brown rice
Optional Toppings
  • sesame seeds
  • sliced cucumber
  • kimchi
  • fried egg

Method

  1. Brown the beef: Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add ground beef and break it into crumbles with a spatula. Cook for 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until browned and no longer pink. Drain excess fat, leaving about 1 tablespoon in the pan.
  2. Add aromatics: Stir in minced garlic and ginger. Cook for 1-2 minutes until fragrant.
  3. Season: Pour in soy sauce and sesame oil. Add chopped green onions, salt, and pepper. Stir well and let simmer for 2 minutes so flavors meld together.
  4. Prepare rice: While beef cooks, prepare rice according to package directions or use leftover rice.
  5. Assemble bowls: Divide rice among serving bowls. Top with seasoned ground beef mixture.
  6. Garnish and serve: Add optional toppings like sesame seeds, green onions, cucumber, kimchi, or a fried egg. Serve immediately.

Notes

For best results, use 80/20 ground beef for juiciness and flavor. Fresh ginger and garlic make a noticeable difference. Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 days. Beef can be frozen for up to 2 months.
